Zakouma National Park

Zakouma National Park is known for being one of the last remaining safe havens for wildlife in Chad (and neighboring Sudan). The combination of being situated between the savannas and Sahelian habitats of eastern and western Africa and having water year-round, blesses the park with a rich diversity of birds and abundant mammal populations. Its famed horseback mounted guard force has helped to keep the park a safe refuge. Elephants, greater kudu, roan antelope, red-fronted gazelle, waterbuck and hartebeest abound. Hyena, jackals, lions, leopard and cheetah are still common. Waterfowl fill the ox-bow lakes left by the dry season stilling of the rivers. Ostrich, Open-bill and Saddle-bill storks, and Bateleur eagles can be seen everyday.

During the dry season of winter, wildlife takes refuge in the park while outside its borders, thousands of nomads arrive from the Sahara and Sahel to the north, bringing with them hundreds of thousands of cattle, goats, sheep, camels and horses. The pressure to allow grazing in the park is obvious, but to date it has been well controlled. The rains of late spring and summer not only bring an end to the 110 to 120 degree temperatures, but also flood much of the park. During this time, most of the mammals must leave the protection of the park's borders to seek higher ground. Where the elephants go during the four or five months of rains is not well known. Wherever they go, they must use lands either heavily impacted (and contaminated) by livestock and nomads during the dry season, raising again the critical new conservation issue of domestic and wildlife disease interaction.
